Bike Hits 130.7 mph. On Snow

33 year old Austrian Markus Stoeckl has smashed the World Speed Record for series mountain bikes. Stoeckl, nicknamed "Hercules" because of his 6'4", 220 lbs. frame, broke the 8 year old record by 14 mph on a 2000 meter, 45 degree run in the Chilean Alps. Because of the extreme cold, Hercules had to hold his breath for the 40 second duration so his helmet didn't fog up. Crazy, indeed, but we wonder how on Earth he stopped. Those disc brakes were surely useless. See the video below, wherein Stoeckl makes it all look effortless.

New Treatment Brings Patients Back From The Dead Yikes!

Doctors in Philadelphia are testing a revolutionary new treatment that is restoring life and bringing people back from the dead. During cardiac arrest, the heart stops beating. It's a trauma alert and people are often declared dead within minutes.

But now doctors at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Hospital are bringing people back from the dead. Dr. Lance Becker and his team are challenging fate with breakthrough new treatments that could save hundreds of thousands of lives. 61-year-old Bill Bondar is living proof that people can be brought back from the dead.

"I didn't know I died, I didn't feel anything, I still don't believe it," Bill said.

"I looked at his face, and I was looking at a dead man," Bill's wife Monica said.

It happened just after the couple left a jam session. Bill collapsed outside their home, lifeless.

"That was the most frightening thing I ever saw in my life and I knew my husband was gone. He was gone," said Monica.

Paramedics were able to restart his heart, but that's just part of the battle. Cells continue to die, and there can be damage to vital organs like the brain, that could be fatal. Bill ended up at Penn, where he got the new experimental treatment of chilled saline that's injected.

Cooling pads are then wrapped around a patient. The body temperature is normally 98 degrees, but cooling brings it down to 92 degrees. Doctors keep it there for about 24 hours. This process is called intentional hypothermia. "It decreases cellular injury when the cells are deprived of oxygen, so with less injury we are able to do a better job of getting people back," said Dr. Becker.

Seinfeld Scam :Suspects Arraigned In Pop Can Smuggling Ring

Authorities in Detroit said they arrested 10 people and seized more than $500,000 in cash after breaking up a smuggling ring that collected millions of beverage containers in other states and cashed them in for 10 cents apiece in Michigan. The 10 people were arraigned on charges ranging from false pretense, a possible 5-year felony to running a criminal enterprise, a possible 20-year sentence.A total of 15 people were named in a 67-count warrant issued as part of Operation Can Scam, Attorney General Mike Cox said Wednesday. Some suspects were members of two smuggling rings based in Ohio and others were Michigan merchants who took part in the scheme, he said.Investigators alleged that millions of non-redeemable out-of-state cans were collected, crushed, packaged in plastic bags and sold at a discount to merchants who then redeemed them.Bulk redemption payments from the state are based on weight.

The probe recalled a 1996 episode of "Seinfeld" in which two characters learn about Michigan's 10-cent deposit law and head there with a truckload of 5-cent New York cans, hoping to cash in on the difference, before getting sidetracked."A half-million in cash is not 'Seinfeld' humor," Cox spokesman Matt Frendewey said.

Teen Finds Her Flickr Image On Bus Stop Ad

Through the magic of the Internet, a photo of Texas teenager Alison Chang ended up on a bus stop advertising mobile phone service in Adelaide, Australia (inset). Virgin Mobile said that it was within their rights to use the original photo posted on Flickr without authorization.

An American family has sued Australia's Virgin Mobile phone company, claiming it caused their teenage daughter grief and humiliation by plastering her photo on billboards and Web site advertisements without consent.

The family of Alison Chang, who lives in Texas, says Virgin Mobile grabbed the picture from Flickr, Yahoo Inc.'s popular photo-sharing Web site, and failed to credit by name the photographer who took the photo.

Chang's photo was part of a Virgin Mobile Australia campaign called "Are You With Us Or What?" It features pictures downloaded from Flickr superimposed with the company's ad slogans.

The picture of 16-year-old Chang flashing a peace sign was taken at an April church car wash by Alison's youth counselor, Justin Ho-Wee Wong, who posted it that day on his Flickr page, according to Alison's brother, Damon.

The commercial use was discovered when Brenton Cleeland, a photographer in Australia, noticed a bus stop ad in Adelaide featuring Chang, with a line on the bottom of the ad saying the image had been taken from flickr.com/photos/chewywong.

In the ad, Virgin Mobile printed one of its campaign slogans, "Dump your pen friend," over Alison's picture.

The ad also says "Free text virgin to virgin" at the bottom.

Bad Breath: You Are What You Eat

Expert: Odor Sticks Around Until Food Leaves System

There you are in the office, sitting down for a meeting when something catches your attention.

It's the girl from accounting sitting next to you. You are convinced she ate a raw onion on her lunch break. She has no idea that the slice of onion in the pita wrap she ate an hour ago is causing people in the meeting to slowly scoot their chairs farther away. Halitosis -- or bad breath -- is more common than people think.

Dr. Harold Katz said one-third of the population suffers from bad breath and some don't even know it. "That's because you can't smell your own breath," he said, adding that your brain gets used to your own odor, a process called acclimation.

According to the American Dental Association, mouth odors will continue until the body eliminates the food. So from the time you take a bite of that garlic bagel, it becomes absorbed in the bloodstream, gets transferred to the lungs and is then expelled you give off a scent...

"Holy Grail" of LEDs: Pure White Light Achieved

Many of us keep hearing about the wonders of LED lights; how they have life spans of between 50,000 and 70,000 hours, how they use only a fraction of the power that even a CFL requires, and their small size. Why then, are we not using them to light our homes? The answer lies in the type of light emitted by existing LEDs. A lot of the light is muted, faded, and doesn't have the crisp white light we enjoy with conventional bulbs... until now.
Physorg reports that scientists in India have just made a breakthrough, a so-called "Holy Grail in the illumination industry" in producing an LED that emits pure white light, suitable for interior lighting of homes, offices, etc. The challenge has been developing a combination of materials that will produce this light, which they believe they have now discovered. Unfortunately, this combination includes cadmium, which is toxic, though it is likely to be an extremely small amount, much smaller than the amount of mercury currently in CFLs.
The scientists now are working to boost the efficiency of the bulb so that it is practical for everyday use. So we'll still have to wait a while longer before we get our hands on them.

Germs Taken to Space Come Back Deadlier

It sounds like the plot for a scary B-movie: Germs go into space on a rocket and come back stronger and deadlier than ever. Except, it really happened.

The germ: Salmonella, best known as a culprit of food poisoning. The trip: Space Shuttle STS-115, September 2006. The reason: Scientists wanted to see how space travel affects germs, so they took some along -- carefully wrapped -- for the ride. The result: Mice fed the space germs were three times more likely to get sick and died quicker than others fed identical germs that had remained behind on Earth.

''Wherever humans go, microbes go, you can't sterilize humans. Wherever we go, under the oceans or orbiting the earth, the microbes go with us, and it's important that we understand ... how they're going to change,'' explained Cheryl Nickerson, an associate professor at the Center for Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology at Arizona State University.

Nickerson added, in a telephone interview, that learning more about changes in germs has the potential to lead to novel new countermeasures for infectious disease.

She reports the results of the salmonella study in Tuesday's edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The researchers placed identical strains of salmonella in containers and sent one into space aboard the shuttle, while the second was kept on Earth, under similar temperature conditions to the one in space.

Amazing 3D Graffiti Artists: Street Painting and Sidewalk Chalk Art

Most people tend to think of graffiti as subversive art spraypainted in the dead of night on urban walls. Some artists, however, including Edgar Mueller, Julian Beever and Kurt Wenner, defy that stereotype, painting and chalking openly on city streets and sidewalks. Beyond merely entertaining crowds, their work has at times even broken world records. These street art images and biographies merely scratch the surface and begin to convey their amazing artistic talents.

Tony Joiner's Touchdown Kiss for Tim Tebow Causes Stir

A kiss between University of Florida safety Tony Joiner and QB Tim Tebow on Saturday after Tebow made a second quarter touchdown pass to Cornelius Ingram has startled the college football world. It's not so often you see such a public display of affection between male athletes, particularly American jocks.

Here's the clip:

"Tebow and Joiner have had fun with their kiss, though it promises to follow them for eternity now that two clips of it have hit YouTube. A four-second video shows only Joiner smacking Tebow on the left cheek as the CBS broadcast transitions into a commercial break. A 92-second video provides more context, including play-by-play man Verne Lundquist's description of what may have been the first same-sex, interracial kiss ever broadcast on the venerable network's airwaves. 'The African-American senior and Tim Tebow, the white sophomore,' Lundquist said, 'they have become very fast friends.' Told Monday morning that anyone with Internet access could see just how fast, Tebow could only laugh. 'Great,' Tebow said. 'Somebody will probably show me that when I go to class here in a little bit.'"

Joiner, who lives with Tebow, told news media after the game: "That's my roommate. I love him. We've grown close. That's not the first time I've kissed him." When asked if he's kissed other men, Joiner replied, "Not many. Probably just my dad and Tim Tebow."

And there are certainly plenty of people who wouldn't mind planting one on Tebow.

"come on roomie, thats how we do it roomie..." Ha ha...

Startup Takes On ITunes With Free, Ad-Supported Service

After nearly five years of development, a delayed beta launch, the flight of its management team, and a $3.2 million deal with Universal Music Group, the free, ad-supported SpiralFrog online music service finally launches Monday.

I came to a startling conclusion while testing the service last week. Despite my having mocked it in the past, SpiralFrog does in fact make sense because digital rights management is so restrictive that any music it "protects" should be free to download.

While others in the music industry move away from digital rights management, or DRM, SpiralFrog founder Joe Mohen says "the time is right" for SpiralFrog to debut, because internet advertising has become more effective, the majority of the service's under-30 target demographic has broadband, and record labels' declining sales have rendered them amenable to the ad-supported music model. He estimates that the service will need 10 million users per month in order to succeed (i.e., make money while paying labels' licensing fees).

Of course, none of this means a thing unless the service works from a user's point of view. I tested SpiralFrog last week to find out whether it's worth your while.

Registration is fairly quick, requiring a name, age, gender and ZIP code. Mac users can't use the service at all; Firefox users will probably need to install a Windows Media Player plug-in that requires all other browser windows to be closed (ugh). The site also requires Flash 9 and SpiralFrog's download manager, which allows a Download Queue window to follow you around the site as you choose stuff to grab.

SpiralFrog's catalog only contains about 770,000 songs, while iTunes boasts more than 6 million. SpiralFrog only has deals with one major label (Universal) and a smattering of smaller indie and regional labels (plus digital music distributors Ioda and The Orchard). I managed to find full albums from Sonic Youth, Pulp, Teenage Fanclub, R.E.M., The Velvet Underground and some other heavy hitters, but was frustrated to find lots of artists listed whose songs weren't actually available.

The situation could improve somewhat by the end of the year. SpiralFrog's label-relations head Jennifer Link said that no label she has approached has rejected the idea of making a deal with SpiralFrog outright, and the site already accepts artist submissions (with an upload feature to be added later). By the end of the year, Mohen estimates, the site will host 2 million or so tracks. Still, unless SpiralFrog can add -- at least -- all of the major labels, its service can only function as a secondary music source.

Coca Cola readying self-chilling soft drinks?

And you thought non-stick chewing gum was the heat. Turns out, Coca Cola may be plotting a new version of Sprite that actually chills itself upon opening. Apparently, the drink has to be kept at a specified temperature before being snapped up, and once the oh-so-thirsty consumer pops the top, "a mechanism inside creates ice made from the drink, so it is not diluted." Reportedly, the beverage would sensibly be called Sprite Super Chilled, and if it does indeed hit the UK (and prove successful) by "early next year," the technology could then be passed along to Coke, Diet Coke or even "super cold alcoholic drinks, particularly beers."

Scientists invent the world's first non-stick chewing gum that washes off pavements

When it comes to true sticking power, nothing holds its ground like chewing gum. Not to mention clinging to the bottom of your shoe or even worse, your seat on the bus or in the cinema. The sticky problem of discarded blobs of chewing gum costs taxpayers £150million a year to clean up.

But scientists may have found a solution: the world's first non-stick gum. Washed off pavements by rain alone, it could save millions in cleaning costs - and put an end to the days of having to scrape discarded gum from shoes, clothing and even out of the hair. Said to be tasty and chewy without being sticky, the Rev 7 gum , as it is called, could be on sale early next year. Its development, by scientists at Bristol University, could end a 25-year world-wide quest to find a low-adhesion chewing gum.

Made of a mixture of synthetic rubber, chalk, wax, sugar and flavourings, chewing gum's stickiness comes from an adhesive compound also used in car tyres. The scientists say they have managed to replace this with a non-stick synthetic material.
